The worst part is when we hurt we can’t get away from it. It’s true for any kind of pain mental, physical or emotional. Here are some fail safe ways to help your mind remember you are more than just what you are currently feeling.



1.Breathing exercises - to increase vagal tone and to just pass time when feelings spike

  1. 4-7-8 breath, in for a count of 4 through your nose, hold for count of 7, out slowly through your mouth for count of 8 

  2. Box breathing, breath in for count 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4

3.Touch 

a)take a bath

b)alternate heat and ice (brings the awareness of sensation to another place as well as may reduce inflammation) 

c) mindful lotion application to places that don’t hurt, feet/elbows

d) professional services massage/facial/manicure

e)touch some nature outside, try to describe the thing through art. Eg a pinecone, a leaf falling, the breeze

f)get some sun.  Sunshine stimulates serotonin

g)masturbate or have sex (endorphins)


4.Escape - give yourself permission, set a timer if you need to.  “I’m just going to take a break from being me for one hour while I read (binge Netflix)”.

5. Smell  

a)make a meal, while doing so really smell the ingredients.  Engages your olfactory system triggering memories of “better” times.

b) create a lavender concoction for your diffuser
